Prior to the 2018 season, the pay budget for SA20 clubs grew significantly from R34 million to R39.1 million.
Also, the organisers changed the rules to require that each team attract a young South African rookie player. The squad now involves 19 members as a result of the player who shouldn’t have ever played in the SA20. There must be a minimum of 11 South Africans present, but teams may start up to four foreign players.
