50-60 runs short

Ruturaj Gaikwad assesses Chennai Super Kings’ loss against Punjab Kings, saying, “I would say 50-60 runs short.”

“The pitch wasn’t very fantastic, so we batted first. The Impact Player [rule] didn’t help either, but it did get better, dew,” Gaikwad remarked.

The Chennai Super Kings lost for the fifth time in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). On Wednesday, May 1, the tournament’s 49th game took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium between the Punjab Kings and the team that lost.

Chennai Super Kings was unable to contain Punjab Kings, who won the match by seven wickets, after amassing 162 runs in the first innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the captain of CSK, spoke up following the match to discuss the team’s defeat against Punjab Kings.

The 27-year-old cited dew as the main cause of the Punjab Kings defeat. He believed that the five-time champions were 50–60 runs short and even attributed the poor first-inning total that CSK scored on the surface.

The pitch was poor, and since we were batting first, I would estimate that we were 50–60 runs short. “Dew, it got better, and the Impact Player [rule] didn’t help either,” Gaikwad remarked during the presentation ceremony that followed the game.

“Even we were taken aback by our most recent victory, which came against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk by 60 runs. Given the circumstances, we didn’t anticipate winning by such a large margin,” he continued.

The issue is genuine: Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings had a very unfortunate day; prior to the match, Tushar Deshpande (ill) and Matheesha Pathirana (niggle) were out of the lineup, leaving the team with a small number of players. Moreover, Deepak Chahar hurt himself in the game’s opening over as well.

Due to injuries that prevented Ruturaj Gaikwad from having strike bowlers, Chennai used Sameer Rizvi as the impact player, which gave Punjab’s hitters the upper hand.

“There are times when you really want to take a wicket, but all of a sudden there are only two bowlers left in the game who can do so. It’s a serious issue. Besides, with the dew, our spinners are very well out of the picture. It has been a difficult day, but things like this sometimes happen, and there are still four games left. Gaikwad remarked, “I sincerely hope that we can turn things around.
