Veteran Angelo Mathews has been called up to Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2023 squad in lieu of Matheesha Pathirana.
The International Cricket Council sent a news release stating, “Mathews, who has played 221 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Pathirana failed to recover from a shoulder injury sustained during a warm-up match and was subsequently ruled out of the tournament.”
The news is somewhat of a boost for Sri Lanka, who are currently positioned ninth in the standings and have lost three of their past four games.
After being called up to the team as a travelling reserve, Mathews took part in the practice sessions in Bengaluru, where Sri Lanka will play England on Thursday, October 26.
The team suffered a setback when captain Dasun Shanaka, who is undergoing group therapy, had to pull out of the competition due to a thigh injury. Then, Chamika Karunaratne was added to the group. The team’s second injury replacement is currently Mathews.
