In connection with charges of match-fixing, the Sri Lanka Police apprehended former national spinner Sachitra on September 6. After a judge forbade Senanayake from leaving the country, he turned himself in to the Sports Corruption Investigation Unit, according to PTI.
Senanayake was the first person detained under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which was passed in 2019 to fight corruption in sports. He didn’t participate in the 2020 Lanka Premier League, although he is currently in custody on allegations of helping two other players manipulate a game.
The Sports Ministry’s special investigation unit intends to bring criminal charges against Senanayake when he appears in court.
Senanayake, 38, represented Sri Lanka in 24 T20Is, 49 ODIs, and 1 Test. Throughout the course of his international bowling career, which lasted from 2012 to 2016, his bowling action produced a number of problems. The offspinner was outlawed by the ICC in 2014.
Senanayake played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and was a part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2014 T20 World Cup. In 2015, he made a modified attempt at making a comeback to the realm of international cricket, although it was less successful. He made his most recent international appearance in a T20I game against Australia in September 2016.
