The Dallas Cowboys chose not to negotiate a new deal with their head coach of the previous five seasons, despite all indications and remarks from the ownership that suggested they would keep Mike McCarthy.
That was on January 13th. On January 24, Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, was elevated to head coach.

Then, on February 11, the New Orleans Saints filled the last NFL head coaching opening of the offseason by hiring Kellen Moore, the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. This implied that McCarthy would not be an NFL head coach in 2025 after guiding the Cowboys to a 49-35 record over five seasons.
However, Osa Odighizuwa, a recent defensive lineman for the Cowboys, was totally unaware that McCarthy was no longer an NFL head coach when he appeared on Kay Adams’ Up & Adams Show.
Adams said, “Are you surprised coach McCarthy doesn’t have a head coaching gig this year?”
“Well,” Odighizu said, “I had no idea that he didn’t. But, well, somewhat. Not truly, but, at the same time. Only 32 seats are available. Not every situation will present itself immediately. The NFL is such an unpredictable beast.
“In my defense I had something I had to get done,” Odighizuwa later said on X, alluding to his new four-year, $80 million deal agreement to stay with the Cowboys.

McCarthy’s decision to withdraw from consideration for the Saints’ opening has been widely publicized for everyone following the NFL offseason. McCarthy is said to then concentrate on resuming his career as an NFL head coach in the upcoming offseason.
