It was announced after several hours of uncertainty that an outfielder for the Seattle Mariners had exercised his 2025 player option.
According to reports, Mitch Haniger, an outfielder for the Seattle Mariners, has activated his $17.5 million player option for 2025 after a few perplexing hours.
On Monday, MLB gave teams and players until 2 p.m. PT to exercise their options. The deadline passed without any formal announcement from the Mariners, media, or insiders on Haniger’s exercise of his option.
Given that Haniger was unlikely to earn $17.5 million in 2025 through free agency, supporters speculated as to why he had not opted-in.
It turns out that Haniger did use his choice. It just wasn’t reported by the due date.
MLB.com’s most recent Seattle 40-man roster, which had injured players activated off the 60-day disabled list on Monday, still featured Haniger.
Moreover, Haniger was not on the MLB Player’s Association’s list of free agents, which has since been removed.
If it wasn’t clear enough that Haniger had exercised his option, MLB Trade Rumors reporter Anthony Franco’s report verified it.
Haniger is recovering from a poor 2024 season. With 12 home runs and 44 RBIs, his batting average was.208.
After Dan Wilson was appointed manager on August 22, Haniger’s playing time declined. After Wilson was hired, he only saw 43 plate appearances.
The Mariners have Haniger’s name in every record book. He recorded his ninth walk-off in 2024, setting a new franchise record. With 58 home runs at T-Mobile Park, he is seventh in club history. He also ranks 10th in franchise history with 119 home runs altogether.
Haniger will be the second-highest paid player on Seattle’s squad in 2025, after franchise star Julio Rodriguez ($19.912 million), barring a transfer or being assigned.
