Conduct breaches

Curran and du Plessis are punished for violating the code of conduct.

Faf du Plessis, the captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, was fined INR 12 lac for violating the IPL Code of Conduct by using an over-rate during the match at Eden Gardens against the Kolkata Knight Riders. It was the season’s first over-rate offence for RCB.

In the meantime, host captain Sam Curran of the Punjab Kings was fined up to fifty percent of his match fees for a Level 1 violation related to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct during the team’s home game against the Gujarat Titans.

Article 2.8 stipulates that “(a) excessive, obvious disappointment with an Umpire’s decision; (b) an obvious delay in resuming play or leaving the wicket; (c) shaking the head; (d) pointing or looking at the inside edge when given out LBW; (e) pointing to the pad or rubbing the shoulder when caught behind; (f) snatching the cap from the Umpire; (g) requesting a referral to the TV Umpire (other than in the context of a legitimate request for a referral as may be permitted in such Match); and (h) arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the Umpire about his/her decision.”

According to an official statement from BCCI and the IPL, Curran acknowledged the offence and accepted the match referee’s decision to punish him.

The decision made by the Match Referee on Level 1 violations of the Code of Conduct is “final and binding.”
