IPL 2024: News Summary

April 19

Due to his slow overrate, Hardik Pandya was fined.

Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, has been fined INR 12 lakhs for the slow over rate in which his team played against the Punjab Kings. MI had only bowled 18 overs by the time the innings was to be completed, therefore they had to use an extra fielder inside the circle for the final two overs. Since it’s the team’s first offence of the year, Hardik’s fine has been kept relatively low.

Conway declared ineligible for the season; CSK name substitute

Due to an injury, opening batsman Devon Conway will not play in the IPL in 2024. Richard Gleeson of England has been selected to take his place; he will cost INR 50 lakh when he joins CSK.

In the run-up to the IPL, Conway broke his left thumb joint and required surgery. Gary Stead, the head coach of New Zealand, said that Conway would need to recover for “eight weeks”. On February 23, during the second Twenty20 International match in Auckland against Australia, the 32-year-old was struck.

Right-arm pacer Gleeson, 36, made his debut against India in Birmingham in 2022 and has since participated in six Twenty20 Internationals. Even though Gleeson took three wickets throughout the game, India prevailed.

LSG declines Shoriful due to a NOC concern

Bangladeshi pacer Shoriful Islam disclosed on Thursday that the Lucknow Super Giants had expressed interest in signing him for the current Indian Premier League, but he had to withdraw because he was unable to secure a no-objection certificate from the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The problem was brought back to light on Wednesday when BCB Cricket Operations Chairman Jalal Yunus stated that Mustafizur Rahman had ‘nothing to learn in the IPL,’ a comment that alarmed Bangladeshi players who have been finding it difficult to obtain NOCs to play in the league. One more day has been added to Mustafizur’s NoC to participate in the Indian Premier League before he reports to the national squad for the forthcoming series against Zimbabwe.

Mustafizur was granted permission to play in the IPL, however Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed were not given permission to do so. Although Jalal had previously stated that they would be happy to give Shoriful the NOC for a specific amount of time, it’s possible that the franchise was not interested. Although LSG was unwilling to take the left-arm pacer for such a brief amount of time, Cricbuzz is aware that BCB intended to offer the NOC in between the home series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.

Taskin Ahmed turned down LSG’s prior offer to join them in 2022 because he was too busy playing Test cricket against South Africa.

April 17

Shreyas Iyer was punished for his poor speed.

Still smarting from the shock defeat against RR, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer has also been fined for his team’s slow over rate during the encounter at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The slowness of the over rate further dented the Knight Riders in the final over of the game as they were forced to keep an extra fielder in the ring, thereby making things much more easier for Jos Buttler. As it is KKR’s first offence of the tournament, Iyer’s fine was limited to INR 12 lakhs.

April 15

Marsh takes off again for Australia.

Despite having returned to Australia to treat a hamstring injury, Mitchell Marsh is still eligible to play in the current Indian Premier League season. The medical staff of Cricket Australia is evaluating and managing his ailment, which assistant coach Pravin Amre called a “worrying sign” given DC’s lacklustre start to the season. The Twenty20 World Cup is quickly approaching.

As far as Cricbuzz is aware, Marsh returned to Australia via plane following the April 7 Mumbai Indians game, which he was unable to attend due to a right hamstring injury. His relationship with the IPL, a competition with which he has had a somewhat bittersweet association, is still unclear. Following an ankle injury sustained in his lone IPL 2020 match, Marsh was forced to miss the following season due to a pandemic.

April 10

MI appoint Harvik Desai to succeed Vishnu Vinod.

The Mumbai Indians have brought in Saurashtra wicketkeeper-bat Harvik Desai to take Vishnu Vinod’s spot for the current Indian Premier League season. A forearm ailment has forced Vishnu to miss out.

Desai, who played for India in the 2018 Under-19 World Cup, has emerged as one of the most exceptional wicketkeeper-bats in domestic cricket in recent years. In domestic cricket, he has scored hundreds in all three formats.

April 9

SL leggie Vijayakanth is signed by SRH to replace Hasaranga.

Wanindu Hasaranga will be replaced by Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, who has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad. His base salary of INR 50 lakhs is what he pays to join the SRH team.

22-year-old legspinner Vijayakanth made his international debut against Afghanistan last year and has only participated in one Twenty20 international match for his nation. In the recently finished International League T20 competition conducted in the United Arab Emirates, he also played for MI Emirates. During his four games, he claimed eight wickets at an economy of 5.43 and an average of 10.87.

Due to a heel injury, Hasaranga was unable to play in the IPL and SRH had to bring in a replacement.

Mayank Yadav facing injury concerns

Mayank Yadav, the IPL 2024 breakthrough pace wonder for the Lucknow Super Giants, is currently being evaluated for an injury. On April 7, the pacer left the pitch after bowling just one over in the match against the Gujarat Titans. Their CEO has since stated that his injury will be carefully watched over.

“Mayank experienced lower abdomen pain, so we are reducing his workload for the next week as a precaution. The CEO of the Lucknow Super Giants, Vinod Bisht, stated, “We hope to see him on the field soon.”

According to those close to the athlete, he will require at least a week to recover from a side strain. It implies that he might miss one or more games. On April 12, LSG will play the Delhi Capitals at home.

An LSG official stated, “He is generally fine, but we need to manage his workload carefully.” Prior to Sunday night’s fixture, Mayank had participated in two LSG games, winning player of the match awards and taking three wickets apiece in each of the bouts.

DC perspiring over Mitchell Marsh’s wound

A “hamstring injury” kept Mitchell Marsh out of DC’s most recent match against Mi at Wankhede Stadium. Assistant coach Pravin Amre stated that the team is awaiting scan results to determine the all-rounder’s availability for the balance of the season.

“We have a few injured players, and Mitch Marsh is a concerning indication. Amre disclosed, “He had a scan, and the physiotherapists will provide us with a report in a week. The precise nature of the situation will then become clear to us. The reports will determine whether he can or cannot.”

Along with Marsh, Kuldeep Yadav has also missed recent games due to a groyne strain; Amre suggests it may take him a few more games to recover.

Lizaad Williams, Harry Brook’s replacement, joins DC

The Delhi Capitals have hired South African pacer Lizaad Williams to replace England’s Harry Brook, who withdrew from the game before the season for personal reasons.

Williams made his debut for his country in 2021 and most recently participated in home white-ball matches against India. At his base salary of INR 50 lakhs, he joins DC.

April 3

IPL 2024 will not feature Shivam Mavi.

The Lucknow Super Giants pacer Shivam Mavi has been ruled out of the 2024 Indian Premier League due to an injury, the team said on Wednesday, April 3, without disclosing the nature of the injury.

“I’ll be really missing [the tournament]. I had expected to perform well as a player for my team when I had came here following an injury. But regrettably, I must go as I have an injury,” Mavi stated in a video that LSG uploaded to Instagram.

“This requires a mentally tough cricket player. In the event of an injury, you must choose what steps you need to follow to heal and recover.”

LSG paid INR 6.4 crore to secure Mavi in the auction earlier this year. In July and August of 2023, he participated in the Deodhar Trophy as a representative of Central Zone, his final competitive match.

The 25-year-old’s successor has not yet been revealed by LSG.

Home games between KCR and GT postponed

The home games of the Gujarat Titans against the Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Rajasthan Royals have been rescheduled. The KKR match, originally scheduled for April 17, will now happen one day early. The GT game slated for April 16 will instead take place on April 17.

Due to Rama Navami celebrations, the BCCI had considered altering the schedule in Kolkata since they were uncertain if the police would be able to provide sufficient protection for the IPL match that evening. This was first reported by Cricbuzz.

Pant fined for slow overrate in DC

The captain of the Delhi Capitals, Rishabh Pant, received a fine of INR 12 Lakhs for his team’s tardy over-rate during the Chennai Super Kings game in Visag. According to the IPL code of conduct, this was his team’s first minimum over rate transgression of the season.

Ashwin supports Hardik and denounces vile fan feuds

Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, is under criticism. Ace offspinner R. Ashwin has defended Pandya and denounced the “ugly” fan fights that have resulted in Pandya being jeered by some sections of the crowd during Mumbai’s first two IPL 2024 games.

Following his transfer from the Gujarat Titans, Pandya was named captain of the five-time champions, but this decision has angered fans on social media. It was also not in his advantage that he replaced India captain Rohit Sharma, who was a popular choice.

“People ought to keep in mind the nation these athletes represent. “That’s our nation,” Ashwin remarked on his YouTube account. “Fan fights ought never to go in such a gruesome direction. I’ve mentioned it a lot: this is unique to this place; it’s film culture.

“I am aware of a variety of concepts, including branding, positioning, and marketing. Although I don’t dispute that, have you witnessed similar altercations in any other nation? For example, have you witnessed the fans of Joe Root and Zak Crawley fighting? Or do fans of Joe Root and Jos Buttler spar? It’s absurd. Do you witness Australian supporters of Pat Cummins and Steven Smith fighting?”

Ashwin continued, citing instances of former India captains performing under their successors, saying, “I don’t understand.” Why should the club clarify if fans boo a player because they don’t like him? We behave as though this has never occurred before.

“Sourav Ganguly was a player for Sachin Tendulkar, and vice versa. Both of these athletes have competed for Rahul Dravid. All three of these players have experience playing under MS Dhoni and Anil Kumble. These players were cricket jambavans, or giants of the game, when they were coached by Dhoni. Dhoni was a player for Virat Kohli as well.

You are allowed to appreciate the aspects of your favoured players or team that appeal to you, but not at the expense of demeaning another player. One thing that I would really like to see go from our nation is this.”

David Willey is replaced by Matt Henry on the LSG team.

The Lucknow Super Giants have selected Matt Henry, a bowler from New Zealand, to replace David Willey in the starting lineup. Due to the English bowling all-rounder’s withdrawal from the competition due to personal matters, Henry was selected by LSG for a base fee of INR 1.25 Cr. The pacer has been an essential part of the national team and has so far represented his country in 124 matches across all formats. He has only appeared in two IPL games while playing for the Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings. Back in 2017, both of those games were for PBKS.

Let’s cling to each other even more: Tendulkar

In the Mumbai Indians locker room on Wednesday, following the team’s defeat in a close, high-scoring game against SunRisers Hyderabad, Sachin Tendulkar delivered a sombre inspirational message. MI nearly prevailed when pursuing an apparently insurmountable 278 before their heroic pursuit came to a stop. They were defeated by 31 runs.

Tendulkar, the team’s mentor, stated, “In the second half, despite chasing 277, 10 overs later, nobody knew who was the clear winner.” “The objective was very much attainable, and the game was fairly open. That is unmistakably evidence that we batted extremely effectively. So let’s cling to each other even more. There will be more difficult times. We’ll persevere as a team and make it through.”

Hardik Pandya, the MI captain, came under fire for how he treated the bowlers. Before it was too late to halt the raging SRH hitters, who amassed a record-breaking 277 for 3, Jasprit Bumrah was called upon. Pandya, though, praised his bowlers. “Our bowlers are something I am extremely proud of. I saw no one fleeing, even on the worst of the day. Everyone was vying for the ball. And it is encouraging, in my opinion. Let’s make sure we support one another at all times. Attempting to invigorate the team that has dropped its last two games, MI’s captain stated, “We will manage together and we will be together, no matter what happens.”

Gill paid a fine for her delayed overrate.

Shubman Gill, the captain of the Gujarat Titans, has been fined Rs. 12 lakhs for his team’s poor over rate against the Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday (March 26) at Chepauk. The sanction was maintained at a premium because this was GT’s first transgression under the IPL’s Code of Conduct violation.

Harshit Rana manages well

The bowler for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Harshit Rana, has been fined 60% of his match earnings for two Level 1 violations of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Rana successfully defended 7 runs off the last 5 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad. For each of the two violations, he was fined 10% and 50% of his match money. Rana acknowledged the two transgressions and agreed to the Match Referee’s punishment.

On television, Rana could be seen dismissing Mayank Agarwal and then blowing him flying kisses.

2.5 of the article says “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a another player in the Match.”

Tanush Kotian joins RR to take Adam Zampa’s place.

Tanush Kotian, an off-spinner from Mumbai, has connected with the Rajasthan Royals for the 2018 Indian Premier League. The 25-year-old has been signed on to take Adam Zampa’s place, the Australian leg-spinner who recently decided not to participate in the competition. Kotian, who was named Player of the Tournament in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy-winning season, was also a key player in the team’s 2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title victory, as he was named Player of the Match in the championship game. Director of Cricket at RR, Kumar Sangakkara, showered the new recruit with accolades.

Given his versatility and promise, Tanush was one of the players we had identified and were keeping a close eye on over the past year. Since then, he has consistently performed well and had a remarkable Ranji Trophy season. We are excited to have him contribute to the club this season and feel that his all-around skills can provide more value and depth to the lineup.”

Meanwhile, injured batting star Robin Minz, who is expected to miss the season due to injuries received in a bike accident, has been replaced by Karnataka wicket-keeper batter BR Sharath by the Gujarat Titans.

March 18

Michigan bring in Luke Wood to take Jason Behrendorff’s position.

England pacer, who has played five Twenty20 Internationals, has been called up by the Mumbai Indians to replace their Australia international. Behrendorff’s injury has kept him out of the season. Behrendorff, who was traded in ahead of the season from RCB, played in 12 matches in the previous IPL season, taking 14 wickets for MI.

Luke Wood, who was not bid on in the most recent auction, will be available for INR 50 Lakh at base price. Wood, who has taken eight wickets in T20Is for England, is playing in his debut IPL season.

March 15

Jake Fraser-McGurk entered, Lungi Ngidi exited .

Jake Fraser-McGurk, an Australian, has been signed by the Delhi Capitals to replace Lungi Ngidi, who will miss the 2024 Indian Premier League due to a lower back injury he suffered during the SA20 finals.

“Ngidi is presently receiving medical attention from the Cricket South Africa (CSA) medical staff and recovering with the Momentum Multiply Titans, his provincial team. In April, CSA said in a statement, “He is anticipated to play again in the second half of the current CSA T20 Challenge.”

After breaking AB de Villiers’ record of 31 balls while playing for South Australia at the end of last year, Fraser-McGurk, 21, made his debut on the international scene. He currently holds the record for the fastest tonne in List-A cricket, scoring it in just 29 balls. With an SR of 158.64 and 257 runs scored in 8 games, he had a successful BBL season.

With a reserve price of INR 50 lakh, he joins DC.

The signing also represents a bit of a shake-up in the DC camp, as Harry Brook was recently sidelined for the season for family reasons. In addition, they are anxiously anticipating Rishabh Pant’s return and perspiring over Anrich Nortje’s availability.

Brook provides justifications for leaving

Harry Brook, a batter for the Delhi Capitals and England, has taken to social media to explain why he chose not to play in the 2024 Indian Premier League, as reported by Cricbuzz.

“I can certify that I have chosen to forgo playing in the forthcoming Indian Premier League—a very tough decision. I was ecstatic to get selected by Delhi Capitals and couldn’t wait to get started with everyone. Even though I don’t think I should have to explain my personal reasoning for my choice, I am aware that many others will want to know. Thus, yes, I would like to share this,” Brook stated in a release.

“I lost my grandma last month; she was a rock and I spent a lot of my early years at her house. She and my late grandfather influenced my outlook on life and my love of cricket. There was scarcely a day that passed at home that she wasn’t with him. I’m overjoyed that she got to watch me play cricket for England. I’m happy that she was able to accept some of the honours I’ve received over the past few years without me being present, and I know she had pleasure in doing so.

“The night before our flight from Abu Dhabi to India, I decided to end the India Test tour because I had just learned for the first time that my grandma was very sick and would not be around for long. My family and I are in mourning now that she has passed away, and I need to be near them. Since nothing matters more to me than family, I have learnt over the past few years to put my own and my family’s mental health first. So even though some people might find this shocking, I know that this is the best choice for me. Since I’m still young, I plan to play cricket for many, many more years and to make the most of them.

“I couldn’t be more grateful for the support I have received, especially from the ECB and Delhi Capitals, thank you.”

Pant’s IPL comeback was nothing short of a miracle.

After receiving the all-clear from BCCI’s medical team to play in the 2024 Indian Premier League, Rishabh Pant believes he is back to action, calling it nothing short of a miracle. Pant was involved in a terrible vehicle accident on December 30, 2022. Pant had to go a long way to fully heal from injuries to his head, knee, and back.

“To be able to play cricket again after everything I’ve been through is nothing short of a miracle,” Pant stated. “I express my gratitude to all of my supporters and well-wishers, but especially to the BCCI and the NCA personnel. They continue to be my greatest source of strength with their love and support.”

“I feel both anxious and excited at the same time. Pant said, “It feels like I’m going to make my debut again.”

Pant is returning to the Delhi Capitals, the team he captained in 2022 before an automobile accident prevented him from competing in the competition the previous year. David Warner was the captain while his absence, but he won’t give up the captaincy to the Indian star.

“I’m thrilled to be back with the Delhi Capitals and the IPL—a competition I adore greatly. I sincerely appreciate our team owners and support staff for being at my side the entire time, providing me with unwavering support, direction, and cooperation. Rishabh remarked, “I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and reunite with my DC family.”

March 10

For the 2024 IPL, KKR has named Phil Salt to replace Jason Roy.

Phil Salt has been picked by the Kolkata Knight Riders to take Jason Roy’s spot since he has withdrawn from the IPL 2024. The reserve fee of INR 1.5 Crore has been paid for the English wicketkeeper-batter.

Despite not selling at the auctions this year, Salt was a player for the Delhi Capitals the previous year. He scored 218 runs at a strike rate of 163.91 in nine games during the previous season.

February 27

Punjab Kings home games in the IPL 2024 will take place at the recently built Mohali stadium.

The home games of the Punjab franchise in Mohali will not take place at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium for the first time in the history of the Indian Premier League. The recently built Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in the city will host all of Punjab Kings’ home games during the 2018 IPL season.

Over the past two years, the MYS Stadium in Mullanpur has been holding domestic matches as a warm-up for bigger things. The venue’s herringbone drainage system is its best feature; once the rain stops, it helps quickly eliminate water within 30 minutes. The one distinctive aspect of the earth, though, is that it is composed of sand rather than the typical Indian soil structure.

Geographically speaking, the PCA Stadium is about 30 minutes’ driving away from the new stadium, which is just slightly over 13 km away. On March 23, Punjab Kings take on Delhi Capitals at home to begin their IPL 2024 campaign.
